Discovery Drive Access Rd – VW Chattanooga
Chattanooga, TN

The Enterprise South Industrial Park is home to Volkswagen of America’s Chattanooga Assembly Plant and an Amazon Distribution Center, among others. These two industries employ thousands in the Chattanooga area and, with so many employees in one area, traffic on Volkswagen Drive was a concern. To alleviate some of the traffic onto Volkswagen Drive during a shift change at the assembly plant, an access road from the plant to Discovery Drive was designed. The access road gives employees direct access from the plants existing parking lot to Discovery Drive.

The project consisted of a road design with temporary traffic control for holiday traffic at Discovery Drive. To limit the cut and fill on the project the proposed road alignment followed an existing haul road which was used for traffic during construction of the assembly plant. The existing sediment basin needed to be retro-fitted due to the proposed alignment going through a portion of it. Additional erosion control BMPs (Best Management Practices) were also designed and put in place to control site erosion due to project construction. Passpointe was awarded the design contract in mid-August of 2012 with a requested construction completion deadline of November 25, 2012. The project was designed, permitted, bid, constructed, and opened by November 21, 2012.
